Autumn in New York

The charms of autumn in New York inspired Vernon Duke to write his famous song. Autumn is my favorite season in my hometown, New York: the smell of fallen leaves in Central Park, the neighbor burning leaves, the street vendor roasting chestnuts. Tokyo in the fall has similar charms, but the nuts from the ginkgo tree, Tokyo’s official tree, have a more, shall we say, pungent odor, though they are delicious when roasted as well.

作曲家ヴァーノン・デュークは、ニューヨークの秋にインスパイアされて名曲「Autumn in New York」を書いたという。
僕の故郷・ニューヨークの四季の中で、僕のお気に入りはやっぱり秋。その匂いを思い出す……セントラル・パークの落ち葉、隣人の落ち葉焚き、ストリートカートで売っている焼き栗……。
東京の秋も、とても魅力的ですね。ただ、落ちた銀杏は、とてもなんというか……強烈な香りを放っているよね。加熱すれば、栗に負けないくらい美味しいけどね。
