John Adams

The other day I attended a concert of John Adams conducting his own music. It was a really special occasion and I could feel the joy and energy being projected from both the audience and the musicians on stage. He performed I Still dance, Absolute Jest, and Harmonielehre. Absolute Jest featured an assured and energetic performance by the Esmé Quartet. I also enjoyed Adams’ program notes, which felt intimate and personal and also conveyed a real sense of his love of music and the process of composing. In the notes he also explains his ambivalence towards Arnold Schoenberg, which I found enlightening.

先月、ジョン・アダムズが自身の曲を指揮するコンサートに行きました。本当に特別な機会で、観客とステージ上のオーケストラの両方から、喜びとエネルギーが伝わってくるのを感じました。プログラムは「アイ・スティル・ダンス」[日本初演]、「アブソリュート・ジェスト」、「ハルモニーレーレ」。「アブソリュート・ジェスト」では、エスメ弦楽四重奏団の、確かでエネルギッシュな演奏が披露されました。
また、アダムズ本人によるプログラムノート（解説）も、とても興味深く楽しませていただきました。それは親密で個人的なもので、音楽と作曲のプロセスに対する彼の愛情がリアルに伝わってきました。アルノルト・シェーンベルクに対する両面価値についても説明しており、僕はそれが啓発的であると感じました。

東京都交響楽団のプログラムノート『月刊都響』は、いつも英語も掲載されているのが、僕にはありがたい！
