Is the Chrysler Building safe? When a 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit New York last month, I worried whether the Chrysler Building and other iconic buildings were damaged. So far there haven’t been any reports of any major damage to buildings or infrastructure.

It is believed, however, that an earthquake even slightly stronger than this recent one could cause significant damage in New York. The most recent large earthquake in New York was in 1884. It had a magnitude of 5.2.

「親戚や友人たちは、クライスラービルは、無事だろうか?」
先月ニューヨークでマグニチュード 4.8 の地震が発生したと知ったとき、マンハッタンを象徴する摩天楼 (超高層建築物群) が被害を受けたのではないかと心配になりました。今のところ、建物やインフラに大きな被害があったという報告はありません。

ニューヨークで地震はかなりまれ。直近で発生した大地震は140年前 (!) の 1884 年で、マグニチュードは 5.2 でした。大地震を想定していない建物もかなりあると思います。
僕は日本に来てから頻繁に地震を経験し、少々の揺れには慣れてきましたが、最初は本当に驚きましたし、今でも怖ろしく感じています。

今回よりわずかに強い地震でも、今後ニューヨークで起きた場合には、大きな被害が発生する可能性があると考えられています。
