Aah, Christmas. I still feel a slight twinge when the season rolls around.

Christmas in America is not only a Christian religious holiday, but also one often celebrated at home with family and relatives. In the 1990’s there was a movement to make the holiday less religious, and more appealing to a larger segment of the public. The expression “Happy Holidays” was deemed to be more politically correct. The archetypal Christmas is one spent at Grandma’s house with the entire extended family. In this way it is very similar to New Year’s in Japan.

On the other hand, New Year’s celebrations in America are similar to Christmas celebrations in Japan. They are often spent with friends, not relatives, and have a more jovial, romantic atmosphere. They usually include the consumption of large amounts of alcohol. The typical worker in America works until December 31. He may leave work slightly early that day, and then he parties until the morning. He then spends his New Year’s day with a wicked hangover, and reports to work at 9 a.m. the next day. Officially New Year’s is a one day holiday.

I often spend Christmas with relatives in New York and then come back to Tokyo to celebrate the New Year with my extended family. In other words, I have a warm, sober Christmas celebration in New York and then have another similar New Year’s celebration in Japan. I never get to take part in the crazy, alcohol-fueled celebrations that are alternately happening in Japan and America!!

あぁ、クリスマス。今でもクリスマスシーズンになると少しドキドキします。

アメリカではキリスト教徒ではない人も「クリスマスシーズンは、家族・親戚と一緒にすごす祝祭日」という認識が一般的で、1990年代あたりからは、人種のるつぼニューヨークでは多様性 (ダイバーシティ) の観点から「Happy Holidays」と言うようになってきました。

典型的なクリスマス (25日) は、おばあちゃんの家に集結し、みんなでごちそうを食べて、プレゼント交換をしたりしてお祝いをします。お店屋さんもお休みが多く、日本のお正月に似ています。翌26日は1年で最もお買い得なアフタークリスマスセールがあります。サイズが合わなかったクリスマスプレゼントをお店で交換してもらったりもします。ちなみにクリスマスイヴは、敬虔なキリスト教徒の方々は、夜に教会で行われるミサに参加したりします。

逆にアメリカのお正月の祝い方は、日本のクリスマスに似ています。家族や親戚とではなく、友だちや恋人といっしょに派手にカウントダウンなんかをして祝います。ロマンティックな気分になるときもあるし、お酒でベロベロになる人が多い。ふつうのサラリーマンは大晦日に仕事をし (早めに仕事を終わらせる人もいる) 、そのあとは朝までパーティー！ そして元日はひどい二日酔いに苦しむ。なお、翌1月2日は土日でなければ仕事で、基本的にお正月休みは1日だけ。

僕はクリスマスを祝うためにニューヨークへ帰って、その後お正月を祝うために年内か年始早々に東京へと戻ることが多い。ニューヨークで心温まる (でも地味な) クリスマスをすごして、日本に戻って同じようにアットホームで厳かなお正月をすごす。要するに、クリスマスから年始に日米それぞれで催されているであろう「派手な方のお祝い」には、どちらにも参加できていない！！
