Creating a homepage has aroused some feelings of nostalgia in me, looking back. Going way back, growing up in New York, I remember my first exposure to Japanese culture was from my grandparents. When I was a child my maternal grandparents (originally from Japan) would often bring homemade Japanese style pickles when they came to visit. My paternal grandparents (also from Japan) would often bring a Japanese candy called Botan Ame. That was the totality of my exposure to Japanese culture until Japan had sort of a breakthrough on American TV.
In 1980 the novel, Shogun, by the American author James Clavell, was made into a TV series. Writing in 2023, I could probably make a case against the show for its cultural appropriation and exotification of Japan, but at the time, my overall impression was that the level of the writing and acting on the show was sub-par.
