Croquette, monsieur?

I ordered croquettes for lunch the other day. A croquette is a deep fried roll that originated in France. It had been a while since I had ordered them and I was reminded of the variety of flavors available: potato, cheese, corn, cream, crab, pumpkin, shrimp, eggplant, curry, ground beef. I think even a French chef would be impressed. The only equivalent to a croquette in New York would be the lonesome knish, the gigantic lump of fried potato that’s been sitting in the street vendor’s cart for the past 8 hours.

For some reason the Japanese pronounce the word croquette incorrectly, with a silent t, similar to croquet, the Irish game. I’ve always wondered who decides, and what the rules are for what the pronunciation should be for foreign words here in Japan. Maybe when they got to croquette they thought it would be nice to have a word that rhymes with Beyonce.

Don’t bug me when I eat my croquette
Or when I be lis’nin’ to Beyonce, unh!!

By the way, pet food in France is often called croquette. My French friends always make fun of me for eating pet food.

先日レストランで、久しぶりに「コロッケ」を注文しました。味の種類がいっぱいありますよね：ポテト、チーズ、コーンクリーム、カニクリーム、かぼちゃ、茄子、カレー、メンチカツなどなど。
フランスのシェフはびっくりするだろうね（※コロッケは英語ではなくフランス語） 。

「ニューヨークのコロッケ」というと「knish (クニッシュ)」かな。クニッシュというのは油で揚げたマッシュポテトのカタマリ的なものです。街のストリートカートの人たちが、朝クニッシュを揚げて、1日中売っています。
クニッシュを「とてもおいしい」と思ったことは、残念ながら僕は1度もないのですが（苦笑） 。

実は「croquette (コロッケ)」のただしい発音をカタカナ表記にすると「クロケット」に近いです。最後の「t」も発音します。
アイリッシュのスポーツの「croquet (クロッケー)」のただしい発音をカタカナ表記にすると、日本料理の「コロッケ」に近くなります。

いつも気になりますが、誰が、そしてどういうルールで外来語のカタカナ表記を決めるのでしょうね？
もしかして「コロッケ」を決めたとき、歌手のビヨンセの名前と韻を踏める発音がいいと思っていたのかな、とか（そんなワケないけどw）。。

ちなみにフランスでは「croquette」という言葉は、「ペットフード」という意味としてよく使われています。
フランス人の友だちによくバカにされます。「またペットフード食べるの？」って。。
