Rhinoceros Beetle カブトムシ

Today, for the first time in my life, I got to see a live rhinoceros beetle. In Japan the children here have many opportunities to see, or even buy rhinoceros beetles, but I never had the chance growing up in New York, since the species is native to countries outside the US. As a child I would see pictures in books of rhinoceros beetles and imagine the day I would come across one in my yard or in a nearby park, not realizing that that was an impossibility.

人生で初めてカブトムシと会い、童心に帰りました！

夏休みに、山でカブトムシを見る機会があるかもしれませんし、また都会では売っていることもあるようですね、日本では……。
子どもの頃の僕は、本でカブトムシの写真を見て、自宅の庭や、近くの公園などで、カブトムシに遭遇する日が来ることを、期待していました。

時は流れ……、さっき調べてみるまでこの事実を知りませんでしたが、「アメリカにはカブトムシは生息していない！」んですね。
ニューヨークで生まれ育った僕に、カブトムシと出会うことは、そもそも不可能であったと、今やっと気がつきました。
