Pop Music Hall of Fame

Recently, the New York Times published an interview with the author and publisher Jann Wenner. He talked about his new book containing interviews with 7 White, male musicians. When asked why there aren’t any interviews with women in the book, he stated that “none of them were as articulate enough on this intellectual level.” In reference to Black musicians, he stated that “they just didn’t articulate at that level.”

After the publication of the interview, Wenner was removed from the board of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which he helped found. Removing him from the board is understandable, but the whole concept of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, starting with the name, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The term rock & roll for me conjures up images of a genre of music performed by Elvis Presley, who got famous by emulating Black music. Not only has the word become a sort of shorthand for racist exploitation, but it also is a genre of music that went out of fashion over 60 years ago. I think they need to rename the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and also remove all of the current inductees and choose new ones based on more inclusive criteria.

最近、『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』紙は、米『ローリング・ストーン』誌の共同創刊者で、編集者兼発行者のヤン・ウェナーへのインタビューを掲載し、そこで彼は7人の白人男性ミュージシャンとのインタビューを含む彼の新しい本について（宣伝として）語った。

「なぜこの本の中に女性へのインタビューが無かったのか？」という質問に対し、彼は「どの女性もこの知的レベルで十分に明確ではなかった」と答え、黒人ミュージシャンについては「彼らはそのレベルで明確に表現できなかった」と述べた。

このインタビューの掲載後すぐ、ウェナーは自身が設立者の1人でもある「ロックンロールの殿堂財団」の理事会から外された。解任の判断は当然であろう。
だが、それでもなお「ロックンロールの殿堂」というネーミングと、そのコンセプト全体が、（そう、開館当初から）僕を不快にさせている。

なぜならば（好きか嫌いかの話ではなく）、僕にとって “ロックンロール” という言葉は、黒人音楽を模倣することで有名になったエルヴィス・プレスリーが演奏する音楽ジャンルを連想させてしまうから。
残念ながら、この言葉は人種差別的搾取の一種という一面を持っているし、60年以上前に発された古き音楽のジャンルでもあります。

現在の社会的ルールに照らし、「ロックンロールの殿堂」をぜひとも見直していただき、より包括的な基準に基づいて「新しい殿堂入り受賞者」を選ぶ時機が来たのではないか、と僕は思います。
