San Gennaro Festival サン・ジェナーロ祭

Last week on my way home from dinner I was suddenly bombarded by the sound of loud music and happy voices. It was the Fall Festival, or Aki Matsuri, near my home, so I decided to attend. I always enjoy these festivals, especially when they are selling food and drink. I often buy an amazake, a sweet drink made from fermented rice.

I have to admit, though, that my favorite festival is probably the San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy, New York, mainly because they sell delicious Italian sausage sandwiches. I first experienced the festival several years ago when I was working at a studio near Little Italy. I was able to enjoy the energy and food of the festival several times during the duration of the event, which lasts 11 days.

For those of you who don’t know, the festival celebrates the life of San Gennaro, who is a hero in Naples, Italy. It takes place every year in September. Yes, it’s the backdrop for the scene in Godfather II where Vito Corleone kills Don Fanucci. And again! In Godfather III when Vincent Corleone kills Joey Zasa. Unfortunately, as the economy of New York continues to change, the size of Little Italy has grown smaller and smaller. It would be a real shame if Little Italy and the festival were to disappear forever.

先週、近所の神社で秋祭が行われていて、にぎやかな音と声に誘われて行ってきました。僕はいつもいろいろなお祭を楽しんでいます。みんな楽しそうですし、特に屋台の雰囲気とか好きです。甘酒があればいつも飲みます。

だけど僕が一番好きなお祭は、ニューヨークのリトル・イタリーで開催されるサン・ジェナーロ祭。理由は、おいしいイタリアン・ソーセージ・サンドイッチが売られているから（笑）。僕が初めてこのお祭を体験したのは、リトル・イタリー近くのスタジオでレコーディングをしていたときでした。11日の期間中、何度もこのお祭のエネルギーと食を楽しむことができました。

ご存知ない方のために説明すると、このお祭はイタリアのナポリの英雄である聖ヤヌアリウス（聖ジェ(ン)ナーロ）の生涯を讃えるもので、毎年9月に開催されます。
そうそう、フランシス・フォード・コッポラ監督の映画『ゴッドファーザー』シリーズのファンの方はピンとくるかもしれませんね。「PART II」でヴィトー・コルレオーネ（ロバート・デ・ニーロ）がドン・ファヌッチを暗殺するシーン、そして「PART III」でヴィンセント・コルレオーネがジョーイ・ザザを殺すシーン、どちらも舞台はこのサン・ジェナーロ祭です。

残念なことに、ニューヨークの経済が変化し続けるにつれて、リトル・イタリーの規模はますます小さくなってしまっています。リトル・イタリーとサン・ジェナーロ祭が続きますよう願っております。
