Art is dead, Long Live Art! アートは死んだ、万歳、アート！

Recently, certain art institutions and governments have been cutting back support for so-called “woke” art, or art that speaks to the interests of women and minorities. Adolph Hitler in Germany, Joseph Stalin in the Soviet Union and Mao Zedong in China all made similar attempts to censor art in the 20th century. The long history of government censorship of art has entered a new phase that is likely to continue for many years.

Also, funding for art and music classes in public schools has been in a constant state of decline.

Can art survive without government support? AI companies have been arguing that their technology “democratizes” art, making it possible for anybody to create art immediately. That would suggest that government funding is no longer necessary for the creation of art, although their argument seems to be aimed at self-preservation, rather than a concern for the future of art.

Is art that has been created quickly and easily with the help of collaborators (including machines) significant? I tend to think that art that is popular, regardless of how it was created, has value. Ideally, in a “democratized” art world, the best art will rise to the top, but then again, if everyone is an artist, then no one is an artist, and art ceases to exist. I imagine a world where AI will be able to create art tailor-made for each and every individual, and everyone will be a very satisfied consumer of art, and an artist!

最近、一部の芸術機関や政府は、いわゆる「woke（目覚めた）」アート、つまり女性やマイノリティの利益を訴えるアートへの支援を削減しています。ドイツのアドルフ・ヒトラー、ソビエト連邦のヨシフ・スターリン、中国の毛沢東は、いずれも20世紀に同様の芸術検閲を試みました。政府による芸術検閲の長い歴史は新たな段階に入り、おそらく今後何年も続くでしょう。

また、公立学校の美術と音楽の授業への資金は減少の一途を辿っています。

芸術は政府の支援なしに存続できるのでしょうか？ AI 企業は、自社の技術によって芸術が「民主化」され、誰もがすぐに芸術を創作できるようになると主張しています。これは、芸術の創作に政府の資金援助はもはや必要ないということを示唆しているように思われますが、彼らの主張は芸術の未来への懸念というよりも、自己保存を目的としているように思われます。

協力者（機械を含む）の助けを借りて迅速かつ容易に創作された芸術は、果たして意味があるのでしょうか？ 人気のあるアートは、どのように作られたかに関わらず、価値があると僕は考えています。理想的には、「民主化された」アートの世界では、最高のアートがトップに上り詰めるでしょう。しかし、もし誰もがアーティストだとしたら、誰もアーティストではなく、アートは存在しなくなってしまいます。AI が一人ひとりにぴったりのアートを創造し、誰もがアートの消費者であり、アーティストでもある世界を想像しています。
