Après moi la Renaissance 我が亡き後にルネサンス(洪水)よ来たれ

Are we on the brink of a new spiritual renaissance? Recently, on the podcast Switched On Pop the hosts noted how there are currently many religious-themed songs on the pop chart, including songs by Alex Warren, Myles Smith and Forrest Frank. There has also been a renewed interest in religion among younger generations in various countries throughout the world, including America and England.

I get the feeling that this trend is a reaction to the current state of the world. Perhaps young people have lost faith in what they see as a hyper-capitalist, hyper-online, hyper-virtual, profiteering, mercenary, solipsistic, isolated world. Perhaps the idea of physically gathering in groups and discussing positive ideas is attractive to them. When Forrest Frank sings:

Oh lord, your way’s better

in his current hit Your Way’s Better (2024), maybe what he really means is There’s got to be a better way to do things than the current system.

Now, I don’t know if an increased population of religious believers will be a positive development for the world. It could have dangerous implications, but perhaps these new converts will find a new form of religion, one that is positive, compassionate, and rational. During the Renaissance, religion, science, and the arts were all able to coexist in a complementary relationship, and the entire world reaped the benefits.

世界は新たなスピリチュアル・ルネサンスの瀬戸際にいるのでしょうか？ 最近、ポッドキャスト『Switched On Pop』の司会者たちは、アレックス・ウォーレン、マイルズ・スミス、フォレスト・フランクなど、宗教をテーマにした曲がポップチャートに多くランクインしていることを指摘していました。アメリカやイギリスを含む世界各国の若い世代の間で、宗教への関心が再び高まっているというのです。

この傾向は、現在の世界情勢に対する反応ではないかと感じています。若者たちは、ハイパー資本主義、ハイパーオンライン、ハイパーヴァーチャル、暴利、傭兵主義、自己中心的、孤立した世界と捉え、失望しているのかもしれません。物理的に集まって前向きな考えを議論するという宗教的な発想が、彼らにとって魅力的に映るのでしょうか。

フォレスト・フランクがヒット曲『Your Way’s Better』(2024)で「Oh lord, your way’s better (ああ主よ、あなたのやり方はもっといい) 」と歌うとき、彼が本当に言いたいのは「今のシステムよりも、もっといいやり方があるはずだ」ということではないかと僕は思います。

さて、宗教を信じる人口の増加が世界にとって良い方向に進むのかどうかはわかりません。危険な影響を及ぼす可能性も無いとは言えませんが、もしかしたら、前向きで慈悲深く理性的な宗教を新たに見出し、信仰を持ちはじめ、改宗する人たちが現れるのかもしれません。ルネサンス期には、宗教、科学、芸術が互いに補完し合いながら共存し、世界全体がその恩恵を受けました。
