Hats off to the new guard 新世代に脱帽だ

During the recent heat wave in Tokyo, as a measure of sun-protection, I decided to wear a dark hat to complement the dark suit I was wearing.
Apparently, my sartorial choices were peculiar enough to attract the attention of my traveling companion, who mentioned that I looked like a Blues Brother (from the movie, The Blues Brothers, starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd).

I can think of many hat-wearing compatriots I would have preferred to be compared to: Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Prince, Pharrell Williams, Frank Sinatra, Bruno Mars, Humphrey Bogart, Matsuda Yusaku. Even a comparison to Charlie Chaplin or Harpo Marx (or Noppo-san!) would have been preferable to the Blues Brothers.

I wasn’t trying to emulate or bring back some antiquated style of fashion. I was just trying to beat the heat. Riding the train, I noticed that out of the 40 or so people in my train car, only 2 other people were wearing a hat. It appears that in Tokyo, even during an extreme heat wave with brutal sun, wearing a hat has become unfashionable, or maybe people have decided that wearing a hat is more trouble than it’s worth. In an interesting development, parasol usage, even among men, has increased in Tokyo. Since the summer of 2019, the Ministry of the Environment in Japan has been recommending parasols as an effective guard against the sun.

毎年記録が更新される東京の猛暑の中、着ていたダークスーツに合わせ、日焼け対策としてダークハットをかぶることにしました（どちらも夏用）。 ところが、どうやら私の服装は奇抜だったようで、同行者の注目を集め、ブルース・ブラザーズ（ジョン・ベルーシとダン・エイクロイド主演の映画『ブルース・ブラザーズ』の登場人物）に似ていると言われました。

比較されたい「つばあり帽子をかぶる同胞」はたくさん思い浮かびます。ジミー・ジャム、テリー・ルイス、プリンス、ファレル・ウィリアムズ、フランク・シナトラ、ブルーノ・マーズ、ハンフリー・ボガート、松田優作。ブルース・ブラザーズよりも、チャーリー・チャップリンやハーポ・マルクス（あるいはノッポさん！）と比較された方がましだったでしょう。

古風なファッションを真似したり、復活させたりしようとしていたわけではありません。ただ暑さをしのぎたかっただけです。電車で同じ車両に40人ほど乗っていたのですが、帽子をかぶっているのはたった2人だけでした。東京では、猛暑で日差しが強いときでも、帽子をかぶるのはもはや流行遅れになっているようです。あるいは、帽子をかぶる方が面倒だと人々が判断しているのかもしれません。
興味深いことに、東京では男性の間でも日傘の使用が増えています。調べてみると2019年の夏から環境省が、暑さ指数の低減効果が比較的高い「日傘」の活用を推進していました。
