Walking around a certain (artsy?) area of Tokyo the other day, I noticed an abundance of graffiti tags on various surfaces, and it inspired (?) me to draw my own tag (on paper, of course, see above) for the first time since elementary school.
I don’t condone the desecration of public (and private) property, but what disappointed me the most the other day was the skill level of the tags I saw. Historically, many of the original graffiti artists in New York had an (ostensibly positive) agenda and a desire to create great art. It is still possible to see skillfully executed tags on the streets of New York. But the tags I saw the other day seemed artless, and pointless (maybe that’s the point?). In the future, I hope that these ersatz graffiti artists will take advantage of the opportunities provided by the 21st century expansion of community art, and social media, to create great, legal, art.
