From her shimmering 24-karat gold torch, down to her Romanesque robes, the Statue of Liberty is possibly the most iconic symbol of the American experiment. Although I imagine a large percentage of New Yorkers have never made the trip to Liberty Island, I have been coerced to go 4 times by various tourist friends of mine, and have enjoyed each and every trip.
Although most people know that the statue was a gift from France to America, it is less well known that the French historian and abolitionist Édouard de Laboulaye conceived the idea for a monument to commemorate American democracy, the United States centennial (in 1876), and the freeing of slaves in America (in 1873.) The statue was completed in 1886. If you look closely at the statue’s feet (if you’re 30 meters tall!), you will see that she is stepping on a broken chain and shackle, an image that represents the abolition of slavery.
Happy 250th birthday to the United States of America, and thank you to France for reminding America what it stands for.
