Eurovision conquers Asia 　「ユーロビジョン・ソング・コンテスト」がアジア圏をねらう

Eurovision Song Contest, the singing competition based in Europe, has announced that it will introduce an Asian version of the contest, Eurovision Song Contest Asia, in November. The participating countries will include Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.

What’s with the name? Eurovision Song Contest Asia. Shorten it to Eurovision Asia, and it sounds like a manifesto for European imperialism. I think ideally, the two contests would be consolidated into one, with equal participation from various countries throughout the world, similar to the FIFA World Cup.

As it stands, separating the competition into seemingly arbitrary configurations of countries is confusing, and is sure to resurrect unpleasant historical memories for the citizens of certain countries. For instance, Australia and Israel will be participating in this year’s European version of Eurovision, even though they are not part of Continental Europe. China, Japan, India, and New Zealand won’t be participating in either version of Eurovision this year.

The organizers have announced that the winner of the Asian song contest will be invited to compete in the following year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Europe. This feels unfair, and seems to relegate all of Asia into a separate, second-class consolidation of countries.

I imagine organizing an event of this size is very complicated, and will be subject to adaptation and change in the coming years. Let’s hope that Eurovision can develop into a fair, equitable song contest that the entire world can enjoy in good faith.

イギリス、ドイツ、フランス、スペイン*、イタリアを中心に、主に欧州の各国が参加する毎年恒例の歌合戦「ユーロビジョン・ソング・コンテスト」は、今年11月にアジア版となる第1回「ユーロビジョン・ソング・コンテスト・アジア」を開催することを発表した。参加国には、バングラデシュ、ブータン、カンボジア、ラオス、マレーシア、ネパール、フィリピン、韓国、タイ、ベトナムが含まれる。

この名称はどういうことだろうか？ 「ユーロビジョン・ソング・コンテスト・アジア」。
長いため、おそらく「ユーロビジョン・アジア」等、省略された形で広まってしまうだろう。すると、まるで欧州帝国主義の宣言のように聞こえる。
理想を言えば、FIFAワールドカップのように、世界中のさまざまな国が対等に参加する、世界規模の単一のコンテストに統合されるべきだと思う。

現状のように、一見して恣意的な国々の組み合わせで歌合戦を分断するのは、混乱を招くだけでなく、特定の国の市民にとって不快な歴史的記憶を呼び起こすことになりかねない。
例えば、オーストラリアとイスラエルは、地理的にヨーロッパ大陸の一部ではないにもかかわらず、今年の「欧州版『ユーロビジョン』」に参加する予定だ。
一方、中国、日本、インド、ニュージーランドは、今年のどちらの「ユーロビジョン」にも参加しない。

主催者側は、「アジア版『ユーロビジョン』」の優勝者が、翌年に開催される「欧州版『ユーロビジョン』」に出場できるよう招待すると発表した。1枠だけ。
これは不公平に感じられ、アジア圏全体を、二流の国々の集まりとして扱っているように思える。

これほど大規模なイベントを運営するのは非常に複雑であり、今後数年間で調整や変更が加えられることになるであろう。
全世界が誠意を持って楽しめる、公正で公平な歌合戦へと「ユーロビジョン」が発展することを願いたい。

*スペインを含めた5か国は、昨今の世界情勢を鑑み、「欧州版『ユーロビジョン』2026」に参加しない。
